FCCLA had a quick meeting Friday, April 14th during lunch in Mrs. McMellon's room, during this meeting they discussed their upcoming FCCLA Banquet that is to be held on Tuesday, April 25th. The banquet will be at Tres Agaves and will begin at 5:00 p.m., FCCLA Advisors will be announcing the 2017-2018 FCCLA officers. If any FCCLA members do choose to attend, be sure to bring $10 to Tres Agaves, April 25th. Mrs. McMellon really encourages members to join us! FCCLA is also hosting a ¨Kiss a Senior Goodbye¨ fundraiser. Members will be selling bags of 10 Hershey Kisses for $5 per bag. You get to write a personal message for the Senior of your choice, and the bags will be delivered to them before they graduate. On a final note, anyone who wishes to donate blood in May, there is a signup sheet in Mrs. McMellon's room, along with permission slips. Any FCCLA members that want to work at the blood drive can sign up to work in the morning or the afternoon. CHASITY BORJA
FFA held their Cream of the Crop Contest on April 6, in Searcy, Arkansas. This competition was an invitational contest open only to the state qualifying team. Carrie Craver is an active FFA member who is on the Land Judging team. Craver was asked how her as well as her team did in the Cream of the Crop Contest and said, “Our team got third overall, and I was the fourth highest individual out all 79 contestants in the Land competition.” Dillon Pogue, a member of the Poultry Team, was asked how he felt towards his team’s score as well as how he thought De Queen did overall. Pogue said, “ I feel we did pretty good considering that every team there qualified for State as well. I placed 29 out of 60.” The De Queen Poultry team placed 29 out of 60. Gesille Montiel
De Queen High School Quiz Bowl attended a meet in Fort Smith, Arkansas on February 11, 2017. Students who attended include: (Group A) Misty Goings, Miguel Montero, Jayden Keels, Danny Osura, and (Group B), Sinai Trejo, Belen Hernandez ,Gesille Montiel, and Eruby Rodriguez. Quiz Bowl members helped host a High School Quiz Bowl meet at De Queen Cossatot Community college on February 24, 2017. All members were accompanied with the Junior High Quiz Bowl members to help the moderators. The meet included entertainment during lunch, “De Queen knows how to host and make things fun around here.” quoted some students from Center Point Arkansas. GESILLE MONTIEL
De Queen Quiz Bowl Recently attended a meet in Murfreesboro, Arkansas on March 9, 2017. Members who attended include: (Group A) Misty Goings, Jaden Keels, Tori Roberson, Danny Osura, Noah Reed, Belen Hernandez, Miguel Montero, Alma Puga. (Group B) Tori Roberson, Cody Lites, Karla Angeles, Josue Castellanos, Maria Campos, Gesille Montiel, Sinai Trejo, Angela Vertiz, Lessley Gonzalez, Alexis Ochoa, and Bhumi Patel. Group A succeeded into playing in the finals reaching to first place in the competition. De Queen Quiz also attended Regionals meet at Hot Springs Lakeside on March 11, 2017. This was a meet in which would depend if the team attends State meet. Thomas Sweeten and Susan Hartness accompanied the club members. The team made to finals which competed with Quiz Bowl Magnolia, however, lost first place by 30 points, however they did make second place. The students who attended include: Danny Osura, Eruby Rodriguez, Maria Campos, Jaden Keels, Misty Goings, Miguel Montero, Noah Reed, Cody Lites, Angela Vertiz, Reed Renfro, Gesille Montiel, and Belen Hernandez. FFA is state bound for the fifth time in a row! Students had to qualify by competing at their southern district contest. The southern district contest was held on Tuesday, March 14th. Tyler Johnson, a current FFA member, explained what Livestock involves. “We judge 8 classes of animals which include cattle, lambs, hogs, and goats. After judging, we are to give two sets of reasons to defend our placings. We have to place within the top 8 teams to go to State which we’ve done for five years.” When asked how Johnson felt about heading to state once more he said, “It feels good knowing for that five years that I’ve been on the team, we’ve qualified every year.” Brandi Frachiseur, a current member of FFA, was asked her emotions about making it to state. Frachiseur said, “I’ve been judging for the past four years, and we go to practice competitions and have practiced a few times a week. It’s gotten very competitive the past few years, and honestly, it feels great knowing all our hard work has paid off!” Lucy Trejo, also a current FFA member, stated how she felt about being state bound, “Well we placed fifth, and that was enough to have us qualify. I’m glad we made it to State because this will be my first year attending.” Livestock was not the only teams that made it to state. This year and last, the De Queen Center Stage group participated in America Sings performance, which takes place in Orlando, Florida. This organization is put together the man, the myth, the legend: John Jacobson, a choreographer who is huge in the choir music industry, a magazine owner, and author. On this trip, we were able to eat at the world's largest McDonald's restaurant and the biggest Hard Rock Cafe, we were allowed two days to explore the Universal Theme Park, which is where we performed as well, and we were able to walk around City Walk in the park. After everyone had performed, all the schools that participated got together and did a grand finale which included four songs; “Feel Better When I’m Dancin’,” “Put A Little Love In Your Heart,” “Sing,” and “America Sings”! The De Queen High School Show Choir, Center Stage has been invited, along with ten other schools, to join John Jacobson in Washington D.C. next year for a very special version of America Sings! FCCLA attended their State Meeting in Conway, Arkansas on March 6th and 7th. The members met at 8:00 a.m., Monday morning in Mrs. Roger's room before they loaded onto the bus. The State Meeting began at 9:00 Tuesday morning at the University of Central Arkansas Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall (auditorium). At the meeting, FCCLA State Officers spoke to the districts about the important events that had happened throughout 2016 and during 2017. After the State Officers spoke to the districts, the CEO, and founder of the "Dude. Be Nice project", Brent Camalich informed the districts about the meaning of his platform. According to the Dude. Be Nice website. ¨The Dude. Be Nice Project is a platform to inspire people to build a positive community by recognizing a person or group in a fun, creative, and meaningful way.¨ De Queen FCCLA members plan to celebrate a "Dude. On February 21st, there was a meeting for FCCLA members who were attending the state meeting in Conway. The meeting took place in Mrs. McMellon’s room during lunch. The meeting began with Mrs. McMellon informing members that they had raised $100 for the Humane Society, and $398 from the Walking Taco and chocolate covered strawberries which went to the members state meeting. The whole meeting was meant to answer members questions about the trip to Conway, Arkansas for the state meeting. They are required to raise at least $100 from their own personal bake sales by Friday, March 3rd. They will be leaving Monday, March 6th and returning Tuesday, March 7th. They are also required to bring the proper meeting attire (black/red/white polo, black dress pants/skirt, and black dress shoes). The meeting concluded with Mrs.McMellon informing members that they will be voting for new FCCLA Officers, and anyone interested may receive an application form from her. Our De Queen High School FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) competed February 9, 2017, at the U of A-Hope Campus in the district meet. 11 out of the 16 students that participated placed in their respective competitions. The following students have qualified for state: Edgar Espinoza (Impromptu Speaking); Misty Goings (Healthcare Administration); Bradi Young (Business Ethics); Alec Lowrey (Marketing); Josie Vaught, Jessica Williams, and Randee Toye (Sports and Entertainment Management); Kaden Tollett and Jesse Power (Emerging Business Issues); Cody Lites (Electronic Career Portfolio); Jamile Navarrete (Graphic Design). Jennifer Collier is one of the De Queen High School FBLA Advisors along with Chad Lites and stated she was excited about the State FBLA Competition taking place on April 3-4, 2017 in Little Rock. Edgar Espinoza, who placed first in impromptu speaking, gave his thoughts about winning in his category, “It was really fun and I’m glad I won, hopefully I’ll do good at State.” The students are preparing for the state meet and will be ready to compete against other top competitors from across Arkansas. January 25th will be the first meeting with all FCCLA members since the return from Christmas break. The meeting will be held in the library during lunch. Members will be informed of the selling of the chocolate covered strawberries. The members will begin selling the chocolate covered strawberries after the meeting concludes. FCCLA Officers will deliver them on Valentine's Day. ¨I’m very excited to be selling again because this is my final year being a member of FCCLA. It was a great experience all together and I'm proud to have been apart of it,¨ said Luz Elena Cabanillas, a member of 2 years. On January 21st, the De Queen Archery team competed in the Glen Rose Tournament. The team received 7th place with a score of 2925. The top 5 shooters who scored for the Archery team are Reed Renfro with 265, Dennis Peppers with 262 points, Ruby Peppers with 250 points, Wendy Nunez with 245 points, and Erika Zamora with 244 points. This weekend the De Queen Archery team will compete in the Murfreesboro Tournament on Saturday, February 4th. Next week the Archery team will compete in the Regional Tournament at Delight on Saturday, February 11th. Both of the tournaments are hosted by Murfreesboro at Delight. The top 3 teams at the Regional will advance to state. The De Queen Archery team is under the direction of Mr. Chaney of De Queen Middle School. TALIA AMARO
FCCLA officers had yet another meeting, January 18th during lunch in Mrs. Jordan McMellon’s room. The meeting began with officers trying to come up with their own themes for FCCLA week. FCCLA week will be taking place February 13th-17th, 2017. The FCCLA members discussed many possible theme ideas for the short week before they were let out for winter break. They finally agreed on the following themes: Media Monday: Members will repost a picture that will be posted on the FCCLA social media sites with the hashtag #DHSFCCLA. An officer, or Mrs. McMellon, will scroll and randomly select a picture. All the pictures will be the same, making it fair for everyone, and whoever posted the picture that is selected will win a $15 gift card. Wear Red Tuesday: Members will be wearing red. Career Day Wednesday: Members will dress as their career. Team Thursday: Members will dress in their sport attire or in their favorite team jersey. De Queen FFA students are in for a busy month of February as well as March. Students have many upcoming events to keep them occupied. On February 9, the Hogskin contest will be held and on February 15. FFA students will be attending the Columbia Conservation Contest. February 16, students will be attending the Little River Sub-Area contest as well as attending the Colt Classic contest the following day. On February 20, the Taylor Classic will be in effect and on February 25, the Hogskin Forestry contest will be held. TALIA AMARO
FCCLA officers had their first meeting Wednesday, January 4th in Mrs. Jordan McMellon’s classroom during lunch. ¨I´m super excited for what FCCLA has in store this month! ¨ said Maricela Morales, a dedicated FCCLA member. The group discussed that they would be selling chocolate covered strawberries for Valentine's day. They will be selling 3 strawberries for $2, and the order forms will be out by the end of the month. ¨FCCLA is really helping make a difference, and I'm very proud to be a part of it, ¨ said Antonette Worthey. Officers would like to inform all FCCLA members that there will be a meeting in the library during lunch on January 25th. |
