On February 23, 2017, nearly 115 Juniors from De Queen High School visited Cossatot Community College in order to see what it’s like to be a college student. The Juniors arrived at the campus at 8:10 a.m. and took up half of the school day. When the Juniors arrived at the college, Mrs. Nikki Evans told them all about the financial aid session available at Cossatot. The session began at 8:30 a.m. and went to 9:00 a.m. The Juniors were then split off into different groups to tour the various programs available at the college campus based on their choices for college. There were 7 group programs the Juniors were sent to tour such as: Medical, Auto, Welding, Business & Agriculture, Criminal Justice & Radio, Teaching, and General Studies courses. The college also had other locations that all Juniors, regardless of their preferred course, were allowed to visit such as Student Organizations, the library, and the college cafe where the Juniors ate lunch. When the college tour was coming to an end, Mrs. Evans decided to quiz the Juniors to see if they remembered everything they learned on that day, such as the session and the individual group tours. The visit to UA Cossatot has given Juniors an experience on what it’s like to become a college student before they graduate in 2018. ANGEL SORIA

Match 1 Barcelona Vs. Paris Saint-Germain The last time these teams faced was in the 14/15 season with Barcelona coming out on top. Barcelona will once again come out victorious as PSG’s main man, Edinson Cavani, isn't as good as their previous man, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, even though Cavani does put up good numbers. Anyways, Barcelona will go through. Match 2 Benfica Vs. Borussia Dortmund Difficult to say, Benfica is in stellar form, while Dortmund is in 6th place in the German Bundesliga. Neither team has made any significant transfers in the winter window, so whoever performs best on that day will come out on top. Match 3 Real Madrid Vs. Napoli Real Madrid’s form is still pretty impressive with only 1 loss in 41 matches, in all competitions. After losing Argentine talisman Gonzalo Higuain, Napoli isn't as deadly as last season. Belgium Dries Mertens has scored 16 goals in 16 appearances for Napoli. Either way, Real Madrid will go through. Match 4 Bayern Munich Vs. Arsenal English teams haven't done very well the past couple of seasons in the champions league. Bayern Munich has been a European powerhouse the last couple of season's, reaching the semifinals for the past 3 years, so Bayern Munich will go through. HECTOR HERNANDEZ
So, it is the midseason break (except for the English Premier League,) and many teams are returning to league play in the coming weeks. But, who will take home their country’s titles? Juventus will win Serie A, just as they have been doing for the past 5 years. Not only that, but they have also snatched up their closest competitors best players, Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli, and Miralem Pjanic from Roma. Currently, they sit atop the table with 45 points to Roma 41, with a game in hand for Juventus. Next up, the English Premier League, has a quite exciting ongoing season. There’s a six horse race between Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Manchester United. There’s a 10 point gap between first through sixth, so it’s difficult to say which team will take home the title. There is a similar situation in the Spanish Primera Division, with the top 5 teams in the league being: Real Madrid, Sevilla FC, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Villarreal, all within a 10 point margin. Real Madrid are the fan favorites, they sit atop the table and have gone undefeated in 40 matches in all competitions. In second place is Sevilla FC who, in my opinion, despite their best efforts, will not catch up to Real Madrid and ultimately drop behind Atletico Madrid. REID DEAN
The Southeastern Conference Championship was quite the show. Alabama played Clemson for the 2017 SEC Championship title. Alabama starts off hard in the first two-quarters leading Clemson 14-0. Then at the end of the second quarter, Clemson gets on the board 14-7 thanks to Deshaun Watson running an 8-yard touchdown. Alabama starts the third quarter off hard with a ten point lead 17-7. Clemson comes out in the third quarter fighting with a completed 24-yard pass to Hunter Renfrow for a touchdown bringing the score to 17-14. Alabama’s not giving up yet. Jalen Hurts found O.J. Howard wide open down the left sideline for a complete 68-yard touchdown pass. Keeping Alabama in the lead 24-14. Clemson starting off the fourth quarter with a 4-yard pass to Mike Williams for a touchdown, cutting down Alabama’s lead to 24-21 with fourteen minutes of playing time left. Nearing the end of the fourth quarter Clemson’s Wayne Gallman rushed one yard for a touchdown bringing Clemson to the lead 28-24. Clemson kicks to Alabama with four minutes left in the game. Alabama retakes the lead with ArDarius Stewart making a 24-yard pass to O.J. Howard for a touchdown for a 31-28 lead. With only 2 minutes left it looks like the game is over then Clemson scores with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Renfrow bringing the final score to 35-31. ANGEL SORIA
Many people say reading is important because it helps improve and expand your vocabulary and be successful in the real world. However, these reasons are only the basics of reading as there are many benefits to reading. One of the many benefits of reading is that you are exposed to a wide variety of subjects. According to JJ Wong of Inspiriationboost.com, those who read often can solve problems using different methods, new ways towards a goal and even find your future career. Another benefit of reading is that it makes you more creative and expand your imagination. We humans are limited by our imagination and reading shows us the point-of-view from a different angle that allows us to learn new solutions and answers. Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of reading is self-improvement. According to JJ Wong, “through reading, you begin to understand the world more” and “you begin to have a greater understanding on a topic that interests you.” Reading is one of the necessities of life to become an intellectual person and to be successful in life. After all, as many people have stated before, knowledge is power. SOPHIE BURKE
The De Queen High School campus has a closed lunch, meaning that students can’t go off-campus to eat during lunch. An open lunch would mean that students could go eat lunch somewhere off-campus. There are many benefits for both types of lunches, but they are different in many ways. An open lunch could better prepare students for the real world. It would be good driving practice, since there is usually more traffic at lunch. An open lunch would also allow students with food allergies or specialized diets (veganism, etc.) to go and get food that they can eat when the cafeteria doesn’t have any. It would also eliminate the problem of people just simply not eating because there is no food that they enjoy in either of the cafeteria lines. Most complaining about waiting in line for a chicken sandwich, only to discover that they have run out of chicken sandwiches, would be silenced. Open lunches would offer students more freedom, which, as a teenager, some of us don’t have a lot of. As a person with strict parents, I can tell you that open lunches with my friends would be pretty awesome. I mean, we could have a few per semester as a reward. A day away from the crowded cafeteria would be good reward for academic achievements. I think we could all enjoy a little time away from school to go eat at our favorite restaurant or fast food place. Also, friends, however close they might seem, will get into fights at one time or another. If your best friend and you are fighting, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to escape during lunch and drown your sorrows in chicken nuggets? I thought so. A closed lunch is more safe. With a closed lunch, the school doesn’t have to worry about where the students are during lunch and if they are safe. A student could simply not return to school and cause problems with attendance because they just didn’t want to come back. A closed lunch also guarantees that the students will not be late to class or just miss classes entirely if they simply lose track of time. If you’re saying something like, “I wouldn’t lose track of time. I’m a good student!”, then imagine that you’re having lunch with your very best friend at McDonald’s. Would you really be keeping track of the time, or would you suddenly check your phone to see how many likes your selfie got on Instagram and realize that - oh no - it’s been an hour since you left school? Exactly. Traffic might also be hectic after you get your lunch, creating another obstacle causing you to be late for school. Both lunches have benefits, but, for the well-being of our students, the school practices a closed lunch every day. An open lunch would offer freedom and fun, but, as high school students, it would be very risky. SYDNEY TALKINGTON
So, if there are any short people in the crowd, please raise your hand. Wait, Wait, why are you guys raising your hand? Don’t you know that one of the main rules is to never mention or express your shortness? It seems like you guys have a lot to learn before you can be called a professional. Well, good thing I am here to teach you, short people, how to come off as tall. To start off, the first thing you should never do is talk about your height unless someone asks you. If you never mention your height then they may never even notice. Another no-no is to stand next to an exceptionally tall person. The first thing people will think is, "Wow look at that short person over there standing next to that guy". Never bring any unneeded attention to your height. The one that most shorties fall for is "Can I use your head as an armrest?" Never, I mean never, let anyone use your head as an armrest. If you do that, then you are just bringing a bad name and reputation to all shorties out there. One of the best things you could ever use are insoles that add to your height. Use about a three-inch insole, but not any thicker than that because you don’t want to make it too obvious that you are wearing them. Imagine the clothes you wear could have an impact on your height, either good or bad. What you girls need to wear are vertical stripes, matching colors, small patterns, and avoid baggy clothing to give the illusion of extra height. For the guys wear skinny ties, keep your shirt short and skip the all black look. The thing to always remember is horizontal strips are your frenemy. Now, we all know you guys are supermodels and need to look your best for the photos, so here is how to make you shorties look supermodel ready in pictures without them knowing that you are really only five foot. The essential poses are to stretch yourself, cross those legs, go high-waisted everything, and before you know it you are walking down the Victoria's Secret runway. We all know that you guys hate it when tall people tell short people jokes. Well, now is the time to turn the tables around and make all your dreams come true. To distract people from your shortness, you need to find any tall person and start spitting out those tall jokes. For example; "What is the difference between a clown and a tall person? Their shoe store!" Scientists have even completed a study on how short people can stop themselves from getting even shorter or to possibly make yourself taller. Some of their results were that living in the city makes you shrink more than if you lived in the country. Also, the more education you get, the taller you will grow. So, to make yourself taller, you need to live in the country and get your doctorate degree. You will be super smart, make good money, and feel and look taller. Finally, for the last-ditch effort, you could always change your religion to Hinduism and hope to be reincarnated into a taller body. The top five things to remember are: never mention your shortness, invest in clothes that give the illusion of extra height, buy insoles, pose like you're six feet, and have all those tall jokes ready to say. If you do all these things, before you know it, you will be on the tall side of things. CHASTITY BORJA
Remember that one time you embarrassed yourself during class or the teacher embarrassed herself? We’ve all had that one embarrassing moment in our lives that we wish we could forget and hoped that other fellow classmates would forget too. “If you think that embarrassing moment will stay in just that class, you’re wrong. The whole school finds out, but everyone gets a good laugh out of it, especially yourself,” said Talia Amaro. You made an awesome memory that you could think back on and laugh at it when you’re out of school. “Act like it never happened, that’s what you do. If you keep thinking about it, you’ll cry,” said Katelyn Patterson. The best thing to do in a situation like this is to just laugh it off and don’t think so much about it. Plus, it makes you the funny one. JOSLYNN FRACHISEUR
College is a place to go to become intellectually capable. Many kids go to college and next thing you know, they’re back at home. Many elders will tell you that college is hard, but can also be fun. One thing I can say is that college is very easy to flunk out of and there are many ways to help you do that. Flunking out of college is something that is relatively straightforward. You hear of many students flunking out because of partying. Partying is something that can be very addicting. Once you start partying it’s hard to stop. College parties happen on any day of the week, and as you know you also have classes during the week and homework as well. When students go to parties, they tend to want to stay for awhile. What happens when you stay out until 4:00 in the morning, and have classes at 8:00? There’s a good chance that you will probably not make it to class in the morning. That also means that you’re missing all of your work in that class, and any test that you may have had to take. Grades are very important in college. Good grades are going to help you succeed in college, while bad grades will help you flunk out. Bad grades are easy to make, and not studying helps contribute to them. Also procrastinating and waiting to study the day before a big test, will surely help you earn your horrible grade. College takes a lot of studying, and if you fail at it, then you should meet your consequences when you find out your grade. College can go a lot smoother if you actually try. The reason that most students flunk out of college for is drugs. Drugs are all over campuses. If you want to flunk out of college and make your family disown you, then go right ahead and do drugs. Drugs commonly happen because of peer pressure. You’ll always have that friend that tries a drug from somebody else, and then they want you to try it. If you try that drug and become addicted, then what happens next? Oh, that’s right you become addicted. Then guess what? Next thing you know you’re missing class every day and you have flunked college. Not attending your college classes gets you nowhere, and that is a great way to flunk college. If you don’t attend your classes, then how are you suppose to earn the grade you would like? You are never there to take notes, you’re never there to listen to the instructor, and you’re never there for your classwork. Not attending your college classes is one the most popular reasons why students do not graduate. Going to class is simply one of the easiest things to do. If you can’t attend your college class, then how are you suppose to attend work every day? How are you suppose to go to work and actually keep a job? Oh, that’s right, you’re not going to. There are several easy ways to flunk college, and I have not even begun to list all of them. Getting the opportunity to attend college is a time in life that doesn’t need to be taken for granted and needs to be valued. If you take college for granted and flunk out, then you will pay for the consequences. |
